The Garden Media Guild Photography Awards 2010

The Garden Media Guild Awards celebrate the best in garden writing - including books, newspapers and magazines - photography, broadcasting - TV and radio - and new media - including gardening websites and gardening blogs. They are the garden media 'Oscars'.

Winner: Jurgen Becker

Judges' comments: The judges felt that Jurgen Becker’s collection of images consistently showed a great use of exposure, focus and composition. It was this combined use of focus and exposure, especially in his close-up shots, that put him above the competition.

Features Photographer of the Year; Award accepted by Juliet RobertsFeatures Photographer of the Year

Winner: Claire Takacs for images in African Eden published in Gardens Illustrated.

Judges' comments: The winning entry scored highly on the technical ability to get exposures right, with good camera control. The feature included a good range of shots from close up to panoramic, giving a great feel for the place. Her pictures really inspired the judges to go and visit Kirstenbosch.

Book Photographer of the YearBook Photographer of the Year

Winner: Jerry Harpur for images in Ulf Nordfjell: Fourteen Gardens.

Judges' comments: All of the images in the winning entry were shot on film, and the judges felt that the resulting quality of the finished product, and the range of exposures that this medium allowed, shone through. They also liked the consistently good image composition, the attention to detail and good use of light.

Jason Ingram for images in Gardeners’ World Practical Gardening Handbook.

Alex Ramsay for images in The Gardens of Japan and Italy’s Private Gardens: an inside view.
