A rose by any other name...

The Garden Writers' Guild has a new name. At the AGM in November, members voted to accept a change in the name of the Guild. At the start of our 17th year we will now be known as The Garden Media Guild.

The rationale behind the change was simple - our membership covers all aspects of garden media communication, including photography, videography, broadcasting, lecturing and writing. It had become increasingly inaccurate and misleading to continue to call us the Garden Writers' Guild.

Change in administration

Due to changes at the Institute of Horticulture, our previous administrator, we have had to move away from the Institute and out of Belgrave Square, and now have a new address and administrator - Gill Hinton of AMS. Gill has been running the affairs of The Society of Garden Designers for the last seven years, and we feel we are in safe hands.

Our new details are: Garden Media Guild, Katepwa House, Ashfield Park Avenue, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire HR9 5AX. Tel: 01989 567678. Fax: 01989 567676.

Gowers Review

As part of an ongoing process to respond to potential changes to member's creative rights, the Garden Writers' Guild is contributing to the Creators' Rights Alliance (CRA) response to the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property. This review has been initiated by HM Treasury, because it recognises that strength of creativity in the UK is a leading driver to competitiveness in the global economy. The Gowers Review will inevitably consider Copyright and Moral Rights legislation and this could impact upon all Guild members.

The CRA is currently calling for evidence to support its response to HM Treasury. Members of the Guild who have evidence that could be used to illustrate how rights have been weakened or acquired, for example through coercive contracts , should contact the Guild's Honorary Secretary.

GMG Newsletter

A wide selection of news and other stories is published in the Guild's Newsletter, GMG News, which is printed every two months and sent free to members.

Issues from 2007 onwards can be viewed by GMG members in the members-only area.
