Garden Media Guild Membership

There are several different membership categories available, depending on your role in the garden media and your level of experience/expertise.

Full Members Currently costs £85.00 per annum*

Full membership of this professional body is open to anyone who can supply three examples of published work that demonstrates that the applicant is generating a body of work communicating about gardening and/or horticulture in whatever form, meeting high quality standards, as determined by the GMG committee, for financial gain.

Declared as income to HMRC or your local tax authority if outside the UK, and in all cases this is above the personal trading allowance offered by HMRC to qualifying UK individuals (currently in the UK this is £1,000). Find out more about this in the UK

Earnings from garden media work includes salaries and freelance fees while working on or for garden media companies or revenue created by an individual’s online gardening media activities. These can include (but are not limited to) advertising, affiliate sales, brand collaborations, consultancy, coaching & teaching, talks, donations, membership schemes, merchandise or products for sale, self-publishing or paid-for newsletters.

Other Membership Categories

Probationary Members Currently costs £63.75 per annum

This is, at the discretion of the Guild's committee, offered to new starters in the profession, who can show high quality work communicating about gardening and/or horticulture in whatever form, meeting high quality standards, as determined by the GMG committee, but who remain unpublished or whose income as a garden communicator doesn’t meet the threshold to be declared to your tax authority (HMRC in the UK) .

Associate Members Currently costs £125.00 per annum*

Associate membership is available to gardening and horticultural organisations and companies, public relations companies, publishers of garden material and anyone related to the gardening and horticultural industry. Any key person representing the company can become an Associate Member.

Associate Members are not allowed to vote at general meetings.

Friend of the Guild Currently costs £45.00 per annum*

This NEW category of membership is open to anyone who is interested in the Guild, but isn’t working in gardening/horticultural communication and doesn’t qualify for associate membership. This includes, for example, probationary members who haven’t made full membership after three years but wish to remain in contact, garden owners or anyone with a keen interest in gardening/horticulture.

The Guild has the ability to gift a Friend of the Guild membership in special circumstances.

Friends of the Guild are not allowed to vote at general meetings, nor buy tickets for the Awards Lunch at a members' discounted rate.

The Professional Garden Photographers' Association (PGPA)

The Professional Garden Photographers' Association (PGPA) is a semi-autonomous group within the Guild, and photographers joining the Guild also have the option of applying to join the PGPA.

Please note that acceptance of membership to the Guild does not automatically mean you will be accepted by the PGPA.

Membership of the PGPA currently costs £25.00 per annum for full members and £20.00 per annum for probationers.

You will have an opportunity to join the PGPA when filling out the Guild application forms.

 

* Please note

  • There is also a one-off joining fee of £10.00 when first joining the Guild to cover administration costs.
  • Membership fees are reviewed annually and any proposed increases must be ratified at the Guild's Annual General Meeting before being implemented.

Gardening and horticultural organisations and companies (including PR companies) who wish to make all Guild members aware of their information, new products or events can do so through paid-for mailings. Contact the Guild for more details and prices.
Associate Members receive a number of free mailings as part of their membership.
