Biography

I am a writer for Gardener's World Magazine, drawing on over a decade of gardening and design experience. I first trained as a professional gardener under Adam Frost whilst completing the RHS Level 2 in Practical Horticulture. After completing a diploma in Garden Design I went on to become a designer and now specialise in planting design. I live on a small farm in North Yorkshire with my husband where we have created numerous garden areas that are used for photoshoots for my articles: generous ornamental borders, a kitchen garden, a perennial fruit and veg garden, and two orchards. As well as writing for Gardener’s World Magazine I create the content for The English Country Garden on Substack based on our own garden, which includes opinion pieces, how-to guides, and encourages readers to find their own approach to gardening.

Talks

Based in: Pickering, North Yorkshire
Distance willing to travel: Within an hour or so of Pickering, North Yorkshire (including York and Leeds). Exceptions include large events/conferences elsewhere in the UK, subject to overnight stay expenses. Areas within half an hour of Pickering (including Malton, Helmsley, Scarborough and Whitby) incur no expenses.

Fees: Depends on the length and content of the talk, please get in touch for prices.

Talks: I am not currently taking any more bookings for 2027, and have not yet opened up bookings for 2028. If you would like to be added to the waiting list please get in touch. Talks include (but are not limited to): A Career in Horticulture - how I trained as a professional gardener, how I became a designer and then a writer for Gardener's World Magazine, and my tips for starting a career in horticulture, particularly for career-changers as I was. Gardener's World: Behind the scenes and on the page - including my experiences when I was Adam Frost's gardener (behind the scenes for TV and the magazine) and working/writing for the magazine myself. Gardening Basics - Edibles: How to start growing your own food OR Ornamentals: Starting from scratch in a new garden. Designing Your Garden: How to set about designing an outdoor space that works for you, taking into account level of experience, time for maintenance, budget, family considerations and size of plot. This talk can be tailored on request towards simplifying gardens to make them more manageable without resorting to just shrubs and lawn. Substack: How I created and run The English Country Garden. An introduction to using Substack as a writing platform to earn money. With a wide range of experience I am able to tailor talks to specific groups, so if you have a topic that you would like a talk on, do get in touch and I can let you know if it's within my area of knowledge.
