Biography

Gina Dover-Jaques of Reading Gardens is a UK-based photographer and writer whose research-led practice investigates how horticultural expertise shapes the experience of historic gardens and cultivated landscapes through analogue photography, observation and writing. Gardens are often photographed as places of beauty, history or design. Gina's work asks a different question: how does professional knowledge shape the experience of landscape? Through analogue photography, observation and reflective conversation, Reading Gardens begins with observation rather than interview, following specialists as they move through significant gardens to explore how expertise influences attention, interpretation and engagement with place. The first study, Reading Rousham, features garden historian Advolly Richmond OBE. Future studies will explore the perspectives of stewardship through a head gardener, design through a landscape architect and ecology through an ecological steward. Further information can be found at Gina's website.
