Biography

Educated Queens College, Taunton, Somerset and Reading University, degree in Horticulture, 1954. National Service in Army1954-56. One year's research with MAFF 1957. Appointed as Assistant to Botanist at RHS Garden, Wisley in 1958; Botanist 1960; Senior Scientific Officer 1964; Deputy Director 1968; Director 1969. Appointed as first Director General of RHS in 1985. Retired from RHS 1993. Publications include:- "The Vanishing Garden" with Fay Sharman ; "The Genus Daphne" with Brian Mathew; "An English Florilegium"with Mary Grierson; contributions on bulbous plants to "Flora Europea", "Flora of Turkey" and the "European Garden Flora'; Editor and contributor to the Mitchell Beazley " Practical Garden Series"; Editor in Chief and contributor to all the editions of the DK/RHS Encyclopedias - "A-Z of Garden Plants", "Plants and Flowers" and "Gardening". Also monthly articles - "Notes from Wisley " in past RHS Journals. Plant Exploration. Involved in expeditions to China, Sikkim, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, South Africa, Greece, Crete

Nomenclature and taxonomy of garden plants and the stabilisation of plant names particularly for cultivated plants. Chairman of the IUBS Commission for the Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants (1979 - 2016) Past President International Society for Horticultural Science. Past President Alpine Garden Society.
