Charles Hawes

I joined the Garden Media Guild as a photographer, where my work is focused on photographing gardens for features in newspapers and magazines. This is still my primary interest. Of course in photographing gardens one needs to be able to photograph individual plants, and do a decent portrait of the owners and often their pets and houses. As a result of this work I have over 5,000 images on GAP photos, but many more than that in my own collection. Many of my images have been used in books and I did all the photography for Discovering Welsh Gardens which was published March 2009 and which was a finalist in the GMG awards. I also contributed the photography (85 images of Veddw Garden) for The Bad Tempered Gardener written by my wife, Anne Wareham and published May 2011. With Anne I am the co-creator over the last 30 years of Veddw House Garden, which has an international reputation and which we open regularly to the public in the spring and summer to individuals and coach parties. This means that I am also a hands-on gardener. I have just begun to accept commissions where I am both photographing and writing about gardens and I have made several contributions to www.thinkingardens - particularly garden reviews.

Additional Interests

I am a keen walker/hiker and I blog regularly at I have completed several long distance paths including The Dales Way, the entire 870 miles of the Wales Coast Path and am currently doing the Cambrian Way in stages.
