Horticulture training includes RHS Master of Horticulture, City and Guilds Planting Design. I have done a garden maintenance round, progressed to planting designs and then went to work for Which? Gardening magazine at their trial garden in the grounds of Capel Manor College. I started there on a temporary 3 months maternity cover and stayed 14 years, becoming the manager of the trial garden. I wrote for the magazine on a regular basis for most of that time, contributing around 18 articles a year. These included a monthly New Plants article which was a round-up of the new varieties we'd grown and regular articles on herbaceous perennials, roses, climbers, shrubs, quite a lot of fruit and some veg. Most of these articles were based on the trials we'd grown in the trial garden. I also wrote a regular round-up of the many Citizen Science surveys on garden wildlife and items for the news pages. I helped put together shoot lists and posed for photos for the 'What to do in your garden in …..' section, otherwise known as the jobs pages. I also took part in the monthly member phone-in, answering tricky gardening questions from our members. It was a fantastic mix of growing and writing and I had a great time doing it until I decided to move on at the end of 2018. Now I'm a freelance garden writer and am getting used to a new way of life and new challenges.
