Sonya Patel Ellis



Sonya Patel Ellis is a London-based writer, editor, author, content producer and artist focusing on plants, nature, gardening, wellbeing, sustainability and the arts. Combining a lifelong passion for the natural world with 25 years of editorial, publishing, design and communications experience, she explores the botanical world – and thus the interconnectivity between art and science and plants and people – through books, articles, artwork, workshops, community projects and collaborations. Recent authored publications include The Modern Gardener (Feb 2022) focusing on nature-inspired ways to incorporate container plants into your home, inside and out; the Collins Botanical Bible/The Botanical Bible (Harper Collins/Abrams Books, October 2018), selected as one of Gardens Illustrated‘s ‘Best Gardening Books of 2018’; The Heritage Herbal (British Library Publications, 12 March 2020), presenting a deep dive into the history of herbals, heritage herbs, modern recipes and remedies to heal, nourish and style with artworks by 18th-century illustrator Elizabeth Blackwell; and Collins Garden Birdwatchers Bible/The Backyard Birdwatchers Bible (Harper Collins/Abrams Books, 20 Oct 2020), combining practical birdwatching tips, the insights of internationally renowned ornithologists and the science, nature, art and history of birds; Nature Tales: Encounters with British Wildlife (Elliot & Thompson, 2010) produced for The Wildlife Trusts; and The Bucket List: 1,000 Adventures Big and Small (Rizzoli International Publications, 2017). She has also produced articles for a variety of publications including Gardens Illustrated, Countryfile, Bloom, Wanderlust, Red and Sunday Times Travel and has a soon-to-launch, plant-based column appearing in the New York magazine's UK arm of The Strategist.
